Tooth whitening or dental bleaching is a common procedure in general dentistry.
Everybody dreams about white teeth and a beautiful smile. Waterloo Cosmetic Dentistry, Waterloo has been providing people shiny and pearly teeth for almost two decades.
Why tooth whitening is required?
• Poor oral care
• Drinking dark colored liquids such as coffee, cola, tea etc.
• Chewing tobacco
• With age enamel gets thinner and porous and dentin becomes darker. To remove stains and yellowish color tooth whitening is performed.
There are two types of tooth whitening procedures:
Vital whitening is done on live teeth. Our teeth become stained or yellowish owing to food, tobacco or beverages. In such cases, we use vital whitening. It consists of applying a gel which contains a form of hydrogen peroxide on teeth. After applying gel, a specialized light is used to activate the gel. It takes usually 30 to 90 minutes. Depending upon type of stains, one to three visits might be required to remove stains and discoloration. Vital whitening can also be performed at home but it takes two to four weeks to achieve desired result. In home whitening, doctor will provide you with mouthpiece which is made after taking impression of your teeth. Once gel is applied, you need to wear this mouthpiece for gel effect to take place.
Non vital whitening:
This type of procedure is performed on not alive teeth. Sometimes stains on teeth are caused due to root canal treatment. Since stains come from inside of tooth, vital whitening does not work. Non vital whitening is used in such cases. In Non vital whitening, whitening agent is put inside tooth and temporary filling is used on top of it.
